Spirit Day 2005  ~ September 24th

Check Out the Pictures!

Another Spirit Day has come and gone. This year’s theme, "Bartonville, a Community that Cares"stemmed from our efforts to aid local Hurricane Katrina evacuees by donating excess proceeds from our fundraising to Christian Community Action. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors (see list below), we were able to send $2,500 plus donated household goods and clothing to CCA.

Our sponsors make Spirit Day possible. Please be sure to support them in every way you can and let them know how much they are appreciated.

We’ve had very positive feedback from this year’s Spirit Day and we are always looking for ways to refine it. The Spirit Day committee has already captured some thoughts to provide an even better event next year.

Speaking of next year, while the warmth of Spirit Day is still with you, send an e-mail to dmillican@townofbartonville.com or call Town Hall with your name and contact information to become a part of next year’s planning committee. We promise you’ll get much more out of it than you put in.

It’s always heartwarming to see how generously people give of their time, energy and talents. This year’s team was outstanding and kudos go out to each and everyone for making this the best Spirit Day yet. Here’s a recap:

Tour de Ville: Chaired by Michele Wetteland and Duncan Stewart. Thanks to the Flower Mound Striders, Helen Stewart and Darcy Stewart for putting on a first-class race. We rebated $10 to the appropriate local school from each race entry with a designation. We had a great group of enthusiastic runners and walkers! The Argyle Volunteer Fire District was on hand serving breakfast before, during and after the event serving up great breakfast burritos.

Classic Car Show: Chaired by Del Knowler. What a fabulous turnout this year! Thanks to team members, Jeff Loehr, Pat McDonald, Jim Knowler, Jim Warren and Randy Van Alstine for making it the best ever.

Barton’s Pals Pet Show: Chaired by Shirley Williams. The pet show team consisted of McKinnon Gary, Kate French, Betty Medlock and Woodie Williams. Where else can you go where the most entertaining pet in the contest is a goat named "Fido?"

Kid’s Activities: Chaired by Chris and Jim Farrell. The Kid’s Team consisted of: Jan Burwell, Becky Scherer, Jennifer Allcorn, Cindy Stout, Theresa Arment, Leslie Ashburn, and Cherry Fuller. We had some new crafts this year which were a big hit! It was standing room only at some of those tables. Sherri Young did the fabulous face paintings and Bartonville Municipal Court Judge, Angie Warner, created some incredible balloon creatures. Argyle High School baseball team members, Seth Anderson, Lucas Hasele and Tyler Bowman set the example for many aspiring young baseball players at the fast pitch booth.

Pie Baking Contest: New this year, created and managed by Lyn Cleghorn. We had nine entries in this first outing. Thanks to all who participated including judges, Fran Davies, Travis Arment, Melonie Bennett, Skip Lindholm, Woodie Williams, and Seth Anderson. All we know is that the judges were smiling as they completed their tasting!

Food Committee: Co-chairs Shari Arment and Lyn Cleghorn did a superb job of coordinating, preparing and serving all of the side dishes and desserts. Thanks to Judy Ford, Heather Arment, Sherry Phelps, "SuperSuppers" owners, Melonie Bennett and Yvette Williams, and everyone else who jumped in to help serve. The day would not be complete without the excellent brisket provided and cooked by Mayor Ron Robertson with Mark Johnson assisting in the barbeque pit getting all of the hot food ready for the table. The Sommer family dished up those icy sno-cones which tasted great on a hot day and Barbara and Dara Warren spun tons of cotton candy.

Flag Ceremony: Our Spirit Day would not be complete without the Denton Fire Department Color Guard led by Mike Harral. There was not a dry eye in the house again this year as the flag was raised and we all sang the national anthem and recited the pledge of allegiance. What a moving experience!

Music: We were delighted when Bartonville’s own "Ripper and the Bitter Pills" volunteered to play for Spirit Day. Thanks so much to Adrian and Cathy Arnold for their willingness to help make it a successful day.

Spirit Day Photographer: Randy Burwell captured the day via digital photography. Randy was at every event during the day... We should have them available on the town’s web site soon. So, check out http://www.townofbartonville.com the links above to view your photos

T-shirts: We all look forward to the Spirit Day T-shirts and this year was no exception. Designed and coordinated by Carla Anderson to underscore our hurricane fund raising activities, this year’s T-Shirt was a hit!

Household goods collection: Big thanks to our friends at Lantana Community Fellowship for spending part of their Saturday afternoon with us assisting at the collection site.

Special thanks to Rickey Perry for bringing the chuck wagon and to Joe Snider for doing the artwork on the wagon cover. The wagon was our centerpiece this year and added so much to the ambiance.

Special thanks also to David and Nikki Becherer and their great employees for providing the set-up and clean-up help along with most of their front yard.

Our Town Hall staff really gets into it and we could not make Spirit Day happen without them. In the center of it all was Debbie Millican providing top-notch coordination, budgeting and fund raising activities. Debbie "makes it happen" and look easy. Mary Plunkett, new this year to Spirit Day, jumped in with both feet and helped all along the way.

Last but certainly not least... A Big Thank You to the Bartonville Water Supply Corporation for the use of their property!

Keep that "Bartonville Spirit" with you all year long. See you next year!
