Spirit Day October 9, 2004

Fifth Annual Bartonville Spirit Day . . . A Wet Success!

The Fifth Annual Bartonville Spirit Day is now in the history books. Even though we experienced some scattered rain throughout the day, we were able to get in every activity. We didn’t let a little rain dampen our spirits! If you attended, you know how much fun we had and how much was offered to all members of your family--including the family pet. Hopefully you met some new neighbors that you won’t wait until next year to see again.

All of the days activities were designed with you in mind by a group of dedicated volunteers that we would like to thank.

Kicking off the day’s events was the "Tour de Ville," our first ever 5K run and 1 mile fun run. The "Tour de Ville" was conceived and expertly carried out by Michele Wetteland. The Wettelands are relatively new to Bartonville, and when we asked for volunteers, Michele responded immediately. Michele brought some new ideas to the table, resulting in a first-class, professionally timed event that attracted about 75 participants. The Argyle Volunteer Fire Department provided a breakfast fundraiser which was appreciated by the hungry attendees at Town Hall that morning.

Carla Anderson, owner of Stitchenz by Design, designed and donated the creative T-shirts for the Fun Run and for our volunteers as she has for the past several years.

Our classic car show, arranged by Del Knowler, provided us again with an outstanding opportunity to see incredible cars, and our thanks also go out to those that braved the rain and entered their vehicles.

Chris and Jim Farrell and Cindy Stout were a great team leading the Kid’s Activities including pumpkin painting, bracelet-making, fast pitch, games and bounce house activities. Thanks to Danny Mims for providing the toss games; Randy and Jan Burwell, Greg and Shari Peck, KC, Parker and Caitlin Thompson and our neighbors from Lantana Community Fellowship including Ann Neel, for monitoring the bounce houses and kid’s activities; Sherri Young and Helen Gilbert for wonderful face painting; and Angie Warner for the adorable balloon animals. John Wetteland delighted aspiring baseball players by coaching at the fast pitch booth and autographing baseballs, ball caps and baseball cards.

Our first "Barton’s Pals" Pet Show, created by Shirley Williams, was a great opportunity for us to meet some of the other members of your family. Woodie Williams, McKinnon Gary, Betty Medlock, Marge Anderson, and Bob and Margaret McKoin helped make the show so much fun. Thanks, Shirley, for taking the "reins" and making it happen.

Thanks to Mike Harral and Chris Aarons of the Denton Fire Department Color Guard for reminding us what "Spirit Day" is truly all about. We were moved by their ceremony and thanks also to everyone who donated to the "Cell Phones for Soldiers" recycling campaign. The money raised will be used to supply our troops with long distance calling cards. We have decided to continue collecting phones, so if you have an old cell phone (with one battery only, please), feel free to drop it by Town Hall.

This year’s Food Committee was chaired by Shari Arment and Lyn Cleghorn. Shari and Lyn did a superb job of pre-planning, which resulted in a delicious feast for everyone in attendance. Thanks to all of you who brought those delicious salads and desserts. Randy Nunn of the Lone Star Country corner provided ice for our drinks. The Sommer Family served sno-cones and Barbara and Kim Knowler along with Gloria McDonald dished up the cotton candy. Mayor Ron Robertson donated and cooked the most excellent briskets, as he has done for the past three years. Betty Medlock, Glenda and Jay Straub, Marge and Dennis Anderson, Ian Cleghorn and Ralph Arment helped get the dinner and drinks to the table. Mark Johnson was instrumental in all aspects of event planning and was on-site all day providing logistical direction, brisket service and also served as Master of Ceremonies.

We wanted a way to recognize our local entrepreneurs and their support of Spirit Day, so under the guidance of Susan Randolph of Lantana Gardens, we created goodie bags filled with great discounts and freebies donated by our sponsors--be sure you looked through your bag thoroughly so as not to miss anything. Hopefully you had an opportunity to meet some of our business owners when you received your bag and will show them your appreciation as you do business locally. Thanks also to "Mudd’s Good Eatin" for those wonderful hamburgers supplied to the bag stuffers.

Also, thanks to David and Nikki Becherer of Lone Star Car Wash for providing set-up and clean-up workers, which was greatly appreciated by all; and that very cool authentic chuck wagon was loaned to us by Ricky Perry that helped set the mood. We had some great photographers bring us their pictures of the activities. We have some very talented citizens! Check out the Town website to see them all.... http://www.townofbartonville.com/Spirit_Day.htm

Lastly, thanks to our professional Town Hall staff, Town Secretary, Debbie Millican and Deputy Town Secretary Kristi Gilbert. They were the backbone of the event and provided support at every turn. As you can tell, it was a great team effort to make the Fifth Annual Spirit Day a reality. Perhaps next year we can entice you to join in the fun of creating the Sixth Annual Bartonville Spirit Day!

- Susan Johnson, Spirit Day Chairman

Hats off to . . . .  Susan Johnson

Without her organizational skills and sense of fun, Spirit Day would have not been the great success that it was. Someone asked "What was the one great thing that stood out at Spirit Day?" The answer would have to be how much fun we all had preparing for it and then seeing it come off without a hitch. Thanks Susan!
